Extended Trading Permits

As part of the Tackling Alcohol-Fuelled Violence legislation, trading hours were subject to the changes, however temporary extended trading permits were exempt. Temporary extended trading permits allow licensed venues to extend service of alcohol (beyond the hours on their liquor license) up to 5am.  At the time of introduction of the legislation in 2016, all licensees were able to apply for up to 12 extended trading permits each year.

Early in 2017, the legislation for the use of extended trading permits was modified to reduce the number of one-off permits for trading until 5am from 12 to six in safe night precincts, and the use was modified to ensure it was limited to “special events”, defined by a criteria approved by the Government.

Data on extended trading permits will be collected to determine patterns in the use of the permits by licensed venues.
